GodMode for Windows: How to optimally configure the operating system

In order to change Windows settings, some shimmy through the depths of the control panel. There they look for suitable options – since not everyone knows the search function of the control panel, the procedure is often lengthy and not always effective. An alternative is the GodMode. This is one possible representation of the control panel, in addition to its category view and small and large icon views, this is a fourth illustration. The GodMode Configuration Center shows the Control Panel entries without any nested hierarchies; but the entries are subordinate to some categories (headings).

Small program activates the GodMode

A quick and easy way to use GodMode is with our batch script GodMode for Windows. After extracting the “GodMode.bat” file from the downloaded ZIP archive, double-click this batch file. Without further action, the script then unlocks the GodMode as a new desktop icon. To close the command line batch window, press any key; the command line also prompts you to do this at runtime.

The exclusive GodMode activation tool now works even better than before: Thanks to a revision of the source code, there are no longer any annoying display errors. Microsoft is to blame for it, the bug affected Windows 10 1703 and higher – the folder name is invisible here. The activation switch recognizes which Windows 10 version is installed – and creates a shortcut instead of a folder for Windows 1703, 1709, 1803, 1809, 1903, 1909, 2004, 20H2, 21H1, 21H2 and Windows 11. As a result, in contrast to the technical implementation via a folder, a (negligible) link arrow appears, but the name is displayed correctly.

GodMode 2.0 in the Windows 10/11 era

The Extended GodMode is not based on the Explorer like the original GodMode. The replica is much more contemporary, easy to use and better.

The original GodMode (see paragraph above and the following article sections) is showing its age. Sometimes a new Windows 10 version causes entries to fly out of it. A GodMode 2.0, so to speak, because it has its finger on the pulse of the times Extended GodMode: It is portable and has a search function like the original. There are also favorites that can be created. The advantage is that the Extended GodMode combs through the settings app in addition to the control panel. You also access management console functions such as disk management. The number of configuration entries is higher than Microsoft’s GodMode (272 vs. 203 entries on a Windows 11 device).

Tool tip: StartIsBack

GodMode for Windows: How to optimally configure the operating system The GodMode shows entries in the control panel, StartIsBack transfers the principle to the configuration app.

The GodMode shows entries of the control panel, StartIsBack those of the configuration app.

Even StartIsBack provides you with a kind of GodMode: The alternative start menu for Windows 10 allows convenient program starts. The menu is designed in the Windows 7 style. After right-clicking on the “Settings” entry, activate the “Show as menu” item, you will see the settings app entries in list form. To do this, it is sufficient to place the mouse pointer on “Settings”, a cascaded menu will then open. The software is shareware, so it runs as a trial version. You must license them for permanent use. We have published a guide to the tool in the article “Windows 10: All settings as a list”.

Tool tip: Win10 All Settings

GodMode for Windows: How to optimally configure the operating system With Win 10 All Settings you get the GodMode and much more.

Tap into GodMode and more with Win10 All Settings.

Another recommendation is the portable one Win10 AllSettings. The program nests in the information area (tray, systray) next to the Windows clock. Double-clicking on the new icon calls the GodMode called “All Tasks”. The tool unfolds its further strengths with a right-click: Such a context menu is revealed, here you access administrative tools such as the “Task Scheduler” (task planning) and the “Services” (service manager). In the cascading “Windows Settings” context menu entry, sub-areas of the Settings app are waiting for you to click, allowing you to control areas such as “Gaming” (Xbox Game Bar) in a time-saving manner. Win10 All Settings does more than the name promises, because the solution already runs on Windows 11.

Call GodMode manually by folder

Technically, the aforementioned batch tool creates on the desktop using the command line command mkdir a folder that is given a CLSID (class ID, class identification number); it is like the access code to GodMode. Alternatively, you can use the CLSID to access the GodMode without the batch application: Create a new folder on the desktop by pressing Ctrl-Shift-N (possible since Windows 7). Give the element a name like this:

GodMode. ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C

You can vary the part before the dot if you wish – it should be noted that the mandatory naming of the term “GodMode” is a misconception, because you name the tool with any information before the dot. The procedure for manually creating a desktop reference is illustrated below. The advantage of this procedure is that you can access the GodMode in Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 in the same way as with the downloadable GodMode batch file.

GodMode: Create new folder

Make GodMode available in Windows

If you “just want to quickly” access the GodMode, it is not absolutely necessary to create such a desktop folder. It is enough to press Windows-R for the Run dialog; give him the following:

shell:::ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C

Because the Win-R Run dialog keeps a history, a so-called RunMRU history in the registry, you don’t need to “copy-and-paste” the command again until this history is cleared. It is enough to press Windows-R again and select the command behemoth offered above. A tip for the window of the opened GodMode: If you wish, drag the address bar control panel icon (to the left of “All Tasks”) while holding down the mouse button to the desktop to create a link to GodMode (then called “All Tasks – Shortcut”). to create. A double click on this leads to the configuration function.

GodMode bug on Windows 10/11

Since Windows 10 1703 (Creators Update), the GodMode has been plagued by a bug – as described at the beginning: If you create the folder-based mode, the name is missing. This occurs with manual creation and when using batch scripts for the GodMode. You can still access it by double-clicking, but the icon display is still ugly. The 2020 updated GodMode CoBi batch file no longer has the issue. You ensure the correct name by modifying the manual generation: Right-click on the desktop and select “New > Shortcut”. Then pass the following command to the input field of the opening wizard and close the wizard:

explorer shell:::ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C

GodMode: Open the start menu

Here’s how to enter Windows GodMode effortlessly

Access GodMode faster on Windows 7

There are a variety of ways to unlock GodMode. The folder tip mentioned above is widespread, but it is not intuitive to use. If you are using Windows 7 – despite the January 2020 update – it is much easier to access the Control Panel alternative via the Start menu. This tip should be mentioned here because it is exclusive to Windows 7 and is usually not available in other guides. In the Start menu search box, type an entry name of GodMode, something like change default printer. Hold down the Shift key and right-click on the search hit, select “Open file location” in the context menu. The photo series shows the little-known procedure step by step. Alternatively, invoke a form of GodMode in Windows 7 by feeding the start menu search with the letter L; After clicking on the entry “Control Panel” in blue letters, the special version of GodMode opens.

The class identification number on which the GodMode is based (like CLSIDs in general) is entered in the Windows registry. CLSIDs are unique identifiers for COM objects, or more simply put, software components. You can therefore also call the GodMode by sending per Windows key and R open the run dialog and type:

shell:::ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C

How GodMode works, how to pin it to the taskbar and bring it to the desktop context menu is the subject of another post.

Finally, an explanation: The term GodMode – or God mode – is not an invention of computerbild.de. It is also used in computer games. The editors have already received a letter (which they printed) in which a reader expressed his dissatisfaction with the term, which should preferably not be taken literally. Should you, as a Christian, see your feelings hurt, please note the following: This article describes a topic that is also dealt with by numerous other media and which should in no way be understood as blasphemy. Nevertheless: At this point, a serious apology, should the terminology be misleading.
