Gold and silver jewellery: can you wear them together?

Good style or fashion sin?
Can you combine gold and silver jewelry, Guido?

For many it is an absolute no-go, others find that there is a nice interplay: Whether you are allowed to collect gold and silver jewelery – opinions differ on that. But what does Guido Maria Kretschmer actually say about this?

It is one of the most common criticisms when a contestant on “Shopping Queen” is evaluated by her fellow campaigners: she carries gold and silver jewelry together. She either has silver and gold rings on her fingers, wears gold hoop earrings and a silver chain, or her jewelry is completely gold but the buckle on her belt is silver. For some, none of this works at all. And it doesn’t seem to be so much a matter of personal taste – many contestants seem to think it’s the supposed unwritten fashion law that “gold and silver must never be mixed”. This is often even used as an opportunity to deduct a few points from the candidate, even though the outfit was actually quite good overall.

But is it really like that? We asked Guido Maria Kretschmer if he agrees that silver and gold don’t go together. He must know. After all, he has an extremely fashionable sensitivity and creates a line of jewelery himself.

Gold and silver – that fits!

“Of course it’s possible,” says Guido. After all, it is “Two precious metals that belong together.” Contrary to the opinion of some candidates, the designer even thinks that this can result in a nice interplay. However, there are a few rules to follow when wearing gold and silver jewelry together.

  • The jewelry should not be too coarse. “So if you wear a heavy, large cross in silver and then something very large in gold, it usually doesn’t look good. But if the jewelry is very fine, it definitely works. The finer the better.”
  • Do not combine blackened metals with each other. “It doesn’t look nice together.”
  • no stones. If stones (possibly of different colors) also come into play, it becomes difficult.

So with Guido there would be no deductions if a candidate combined silver and gold jewelry.

Of course, the same applies here: Your own taste is what counts. Everyone should only wear what they feel comfortable with. If the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when you layer silver and gold necklaces, then it’s best not to. But it is not an absolute fashion no-go.
