  • Mujinga Kambundji secures the gold medal over 200 m at the European Championships in Munich.
  • For the woman from Bern it is the first major outdoor title and the second medal at this European Championship after silver over 100 m.
  • Switzerland increases the total at the European Championships to 12 medals.

Over 100 m, Mujinga Kambundji had just missed out on victory in Munich’s Olympic Stadium. The 30-year-old from Bern could no longer be beat over half the course. She showed a perfect race, came out of the corner as the leader and also kept top favorite Dina Asher-Smith behind her at the finish. With a time of 22.32 seconds, she relegated the Briton to 2nd place by 0.11 seconds. Denmark’s Ida Karstoft was third.

For Kambundji it is the first outdoor title at a major event. Before the title fights in Munich, she had already won a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha (200 m) and at the 2016 European Championships in Amsterdam (100 m). Her palmarès also includes World Championship gold over 60 m at the World Indoor Championships in Belgrade this year.

Swiss team equals record

Kambundji secured Swiss Athletics their fifth medal at these continental championships. The Swiss delegation has thus equalized the record from 2016 in Amsterdam. And the competitions last two days. Overall, Switzerland now has 12 medals at the European Championships.
