Golden Globe: Film award ceremony will be postponed to the end of February

The Golden Globe Awards will not be awarded until February 28 next year. This was announced by the organizer, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The film award is usually awarded in early January. After the Oscars, the Golden Globes are the most important cinema and TV awards.

It is not clear whether the organizers are responding to the effects of the corona pandemic on the film industry. The corona virus is at least not mentioned in the message. Nevertheless, it can be assumed that the schedules of many film productions and filming have been mixed up and cinemas are still largely closed.

The rules will be adjusted

The HFPA intends to provide information on the criteria for eligibility and the voting period in the coming weeks. Then the revised standardization procedure should also be announced. Changes to the rules had already been communicated beforehand. Usually, a film screening must be arranged for all HFPA members, which takes place in an independent screening room within Los Angeles. However, since this is not possible due to the closure of public screening rooms in LA, this rule is temporarily waived.

Instead, the HFPA now provides that all studios provide members with a stream or a DVD of the film so that they can watch it at home. This has to be done by a certain date so that they can be considered for a nomination. The new regulation will initially apply from March 15 to April 30, and may be extended afterwards.

In addition, films can now be nominated that have not been first evaluated in the cinema before being released on streaming, television or on DVD and Blu-ray. However, studios have to prove that an initial release was planned between March 15 and April 30.

Original date of the Academy Awards

The Academy Awards were originally scheduled to take place on February 28, 2021. However, the 93rd Academy Awards had already been postponed to April 25, 2021 in mid-June. This is to ensure that filmmakers can finish and publish their works without being punished for something beyond their control, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said in a statement.
