Golden Globes: rules changed due to coronavirus pandemic

Because of the corona virus, the film world is currently largely silent. Numerous productions and filming were interrupted, cinemas are mostly closed. Now the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is also reacting to the effects of the pandemic and is therefore changing the admission requirements for the nomination of a Golden Globe.

Usually, a film screening must be arranged for all HFPA members, which takes place in an independent screening room within Los Angeles. However, since this is not possible due to the closure of public screening rooms in LA, this rule is temporarily waived.

Instead, the HFPA now provides that all studios provide members with a stream or a DVD of the film so that they can watch it at home. This must be done by a certain date so that they can be considered for a nomination. The new regulation will initially apply from March 15 to April 30, and may be extended afterwards.

No initial evaluation in the cinema necessary

In addition, films can now be nominated that have not received an initial evaluation in the cinema before being released on streaming, television or on DVD and Blu-ray. However, studios have to prove that an initial release was planned between March 15 and April 30.
