At the Golden Globes there should be no more presents in the future. The organizers of the award apparently want to polish up their image.
Will there soon be no more gifts for the organizers of the Golden Globes? As reported by “The Hollywood Reporter”, the “Hollywood Foreign Press Association” (HFPA) announced in a statement on Friday that its members are no longer allowed to accept gifts from the entertainment industry.
The organization consists of press representatives from all over the world who decide on the awarding of the awards. “The HFPA remains committed to the changes that it announced in May. Yesterday the organization set a few more levers in motion to drive the changes forward,” the board emphasized in the statement.
Lawsuit against the organization of the press representatives
The rule change comes after heavy criticism against the organizers and a complaint by a Norwegian journalist last year, reported by the Los Angeles Times. It said that the HFPA had excluded qualified applicants from abroad. In addition, members of the organization are said to have received payments from film studios and broadcasters to which they later give awards.
In retrospect, the press representatives were accused of being influenceable and purchasable. The cultural diversity of the organization was also criticized. All of this was swept under the carpet in retrospect. The damage to its image had consequences: The US broadcaster NBC then announced that it would not broadcast the award next year.
The 79th edition will follow in 2022
One obviously wants to avoid such criticism in the future. Advertising material and gifts from actors, publicists, film studios, directors and other actors in the film and television industry can no longer be accepted.
Along with the Oscar, the Golden Globe is an important award from the film industry. It is awarded a few weeks before the Oscar every year. The Golden Globe ceremony will take place for the 79th time in 2022.
