In recent years, the Golden Globes have suffered from a self-inflicted crisis. Those responsible for the film prize were accused of not having enough diversity and transparency. The organizers reacted as part of a restructuring and this year the award ceremony has not been boycotted anymore. Traditionally, the 80th Golden Globes will be broadcast on TV again.
The Best Movies at the Golden Globes
The big winner of the evening is “The Banshees of Inisherin”, the comedy, which takes place in Ireland, won three prizes. As Steve Spielberg-directed drama The Fabelmans wins the premier Golden Globe for Best Picture in the Drama category, blockbusters Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick miss out.
The film “Everytime Everywhere all at once” won two awards for excellent actresses. The film is about a Chinese woman who runs a laundromat in the US and discovers that she has supernatural powers. Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress in a Musical/Comedy for her performance.
Austin Butler won Best Actor in the Drama category for his portrayal of the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll in the film “Elvis”. Cate Blanchett received the Golden Globe for Best Actress for her portrayal of the first female chief conductor of a major German orchestra.
Abbott Elementary clears up the series
In addition to the prizes for filmmakers, Golden Globes are also distributed for series. For example, Quinta Brunson (Abbott Elementary) beat Jenna Ortega (Wednesday) and Kaley Cuoco (The Flight Attendant) for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
Tyler James Williams also won the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in Abbott Elementary. As the icing on the cake to end the evening, the sitcom scooped the award for Best Comedy Series. The prelude to Game of Thornes, House of the Dragon, won Best Drama Series.
In the series, not only is there a distinction between drama and comedy, but prizes are also awarded in the TV series/short series category. Amanda Seyfried, 37, won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in The Dropout.
As for the leading actors, Evan Peters goes home with the award. He played mass murderer Jeffrey Dahmer in the controversial but highly successful fictionalized Netflix documentary.
Eddie Murphy Award for Lifetime Achievement
The actor, singer and comedian Eddie Murphy received the award for his life’s work to great applause. The breakthrough came for the now 62-year-old in 1980 as part of the ensemble of “Saturday Night Live”.
