Beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder, it can also be calculated. The list of the most beautiful cars created in this way includes at least a few design classics.
Flat and wide is beautiful. At least that applies to cars. A British registration service provider has now compared the proportions of numerous vehicle fronts with the “golden section”. The list of beauties only includes sports cars. Surprisingly many of them with a mid-engine.
According to the calculations, the closest thing to the ideal ratio of length and width is the McLaren F1 from 1994, whose “face” deviates from the golden ratio by just 1.3 percent. The 1.14 meter flat mid-engine three-seater should in theory be the most beautiful car in the world. In second place is the 1970 Lamborghini Miura, which is also powered by a mid-engine, and deviates from the ideal value by 1.94 percent. In the 1957 Ferrari TR250 in third place, it is already 2.36 percent.
In the relevant lists of automotive beauties, at least the Lamborghini Miura appears regularly. The McLaren is more admired for technology and driving performance, the Ferrari suffers in this respect from the strong in-house competition, which usually occupies the top places in the form of 250 GTO and Testarossa. Also in the list of Click4reg there are nine models from Maranello – a record.
Mid-engine athletes are also well represented, and their particularly flat design probably benefits from the arithmetic formula. The front seats include Lancia Stratos, Ford GT40 and Lamborghini Countach. The best-placed German car is the Porsche 911 in 23rd place. Five places later, the Jaguar E-Type follows, which is considered by many sports car fans to be the most beautiful car of all time. The latest car in the ranking is the Bugatti Chiron hypercar from 2007 in 5th place.
