During the Nintendo Direct, which was held yesterday, the return of a legendary game was announced: goldeneye 007, scheduled for 2023! A remastered version which will also host an online multiplayer component. It will also be available in Microsoft’s XBox Gamepass.

A legendary license

Almost 27 years ago, Goldeneye, the 17th opus in the indestructible James Bond saga, was released on our (big) screens, worn this time by Pierce Brosnan who slipped under the costume of Agent 007. A film released also after a six-year hiatus from the franchise, due to legal disputes. The film also has a historical significance: it is indeed the first in the series to be made after the fall of the USSR and the end of the Cold War, which remains the backstory of the story.

As often, not to say almost always, such a strong license has drained in its wake many derivative products, including a video game. But, unlike many titles developed in a hurry by undersized teams and tight budgets, designed as simple opportunistic derivatives, the game goldeneye 007released on the Nintendo 64 console and developed by Rare, was a small revolution in the video game world.

It was the first first-person shooter (FPS) to integrate stealth elements and to achieve such high realism, with enemies equipped with true artificial intelligence, as well as for the quality of its multiplayer mode.

With estimated sales of eight million copies despite a late release two years after the film, it contributed greatly to the popularity of the FPS genre, as well as being one of the rare cases of a successful film-to-game adaptation.

Third biggest commercial success on the Nintendo 64 system, goldeneye 007 had several spiritual heirs, such as Perfect Darkthe new game from the Rare studio released in 2000, an unofficial sequel to this goldeneye 007 developed with the same game engine. Half Life at Splinter Cell through the (mis)adventures of agent 47 alias Hitmanmany titles owe him a great deal.
