(Reuters) – Goldman Sachs will lay off up to 4,000 people as the U.S. bank struggles to meet profitability targets, the Semafor news platform reported on Friday, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to a report, company officials have been asked to identify underperforming employees, with a view to enabling an 8% reduction in the workforce early next year. Some of the people behind the report, however, clarified that no definitive list has been drawn up.

The bank had said in September that it planned to cut jobs, after halting the annual practice for two years during the pandemic, according to statements made to Reuters by a source familiar with the matter.

Goldman Sachs did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
