The traditional company Hug is almost 150 years old and is known for its cookies or brands like Dar-Vida. Despite its long existence, the success does not seem to have fallen by the wayside.

The long-established company Hug should be known to many mainly because of their cookies. This includes the Wernli brand, which the company took over a few years ago. However, the Hug company can not only look back on a successful year 2022 in the biscuits sector, above all, the “gastronomy” division also grew at an above-average rate last year.

Pandemic downturn overcome

The company presented business figures for the past year on Thursday. Sales rose sharply by 10 million francs to a total of 123 million francs. In particular, the catering sector increased by 33 percent compared to the previous year.

We have good semi-finished products that can be easily and quickly processed into great desserts.

Above all, their semi-finished products, the tartelettes, are in demand in the catering trade. These are empty cake bases in a sweet or salty version, which are produced in different sizes. The global shortage of skilled workers is very beneficial for the business, says co-managing director Anna Hug: “We have good semi-finished products that can be processed quickly and easily into great desserts.”

Company wants to grow internationally

Production could hardly keep up with the tartlet orders. Because these would also be in great demand internationally. “We export from Switzerland around the world,” says Marianne Wüthrich Gross, co-managing director. According to their own statements, the global export share of Hug baked goods is around 16 percent. The managing directors have set themselves the goal of expanding in particular in export for international gastronomy. Hug is therefore investing 10 million euros in the renewal of a tartlet production line over the next two years in order to double the production capacity.

Successful female co-leadership

The 146-year-old family business based in Malters, Lucerne is now in its fifth generation. For the past six months, Anna Hug and Marianne Wüthrich Gross have jointly managed the operative business of the Hug company. Anna Hug heads the “Markets” department and Marianne Wüthrich Gross the “Operations” department.

You can vote better. The two of you have more ideas and yet everyone has their own area.

The co-management model is ideal for the two women. Because it is important for both of them to be able to take on the management role on a part-time basis. In addition, they would achieve better results in this constellation, since, according to Wüthrich Gross, the two would complement each other perfectly: “You can coordinate better. You have more ideas when you are two people, and yet everyone has their own area.”

Many other companies have already become aware of Anna Hug and Marianne Wüthrich Gross through the female co-management. Wüthrich Gross says about the modern management model: “We are trying to go our own way. And to really develop something ourselves with our colleagues that is right for us.»
