Good deal – The Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G “5 star” fixed focal length lens at €519.00 (-15%)

Sony presented three lenses with identical size and design: the FE 50mm F2.5 G, FE 24mm F2.8 G and, the most original and tested today, FE 40mm F2.5 G. The atypical focal length is- is it the only asset of this objective?

After a very good FE 50mm F2.5 G, Sony also offers an excellent FE 40mm F2.5 G. This lens with a less common focal length is ideal for street photography enthusiasts, or even those looking for maximum versatility. We don’t find much to complain about, other than fairly marked vignetting and a limited maximum aperture. A compact, complete lens with very good sharpness: what else ?

Strong points

• Resistance to humidity and dust.

• Customizable control button.
• Disengageable diaphragm ring.
• Very good level of sharpness.

Weak points

• No stabilization.
• Reduced maximum opening.
• Very marked vignetting.

If you want to enhance your optical fleet with an all-purpose fixed focal length, rather compact, bright and with excellent sharpness, this Samyang AF 50mm F1.4 FE II is worth considering. Obviously everything is not perfect, especially in terms of sharpness at full aperture, nevertheless, this South Korean 50 mm does not lack panache and can constitute a good compromise compared to much more high-end lenses.
