5 tips from an expert to keep your good resolutions

Do you want to increase your probability of transforming your new goals into real and lasting behavior change? Here are five tips from Dr. Bruene that will help you get there.

  • Set yourself some “approach objectives” which consist of adopting positive behaviors such as “swim twice a week”, or “drink 1.5 L of water every day”. On the contrary, we must avoid “avoidance goals” such as “don’t eat sweets” or “don’t use your phone for more than two hours”. These objectives are intended to extinguish negative behaviors and are most often not kept in the long term.
  • Use the SMART method which consists of defining objectives and indicators Sspecific, Mesurable, HASacceptable, Rrealistic and Ttemporally defined.
  • Accept your misbehavior if there are any. Taking a wrong step does not mean that it is a failure and that you have to give up everything. Indeed, there is no harm in getting back in the saddle, and making a fresh start after having strayed from your goal. What matters is the end result, your resolution can be kept despite missteps.
  • Find a loved one or friend to achieve this good resolution together. If it is, for example, joining the gym or taking regular walks, there is nothing like doing it together to motivate yourself more and stick to your goal over time.
  • Share your new goals with someone to which you will have to report on your progress. Preferably choose a person who will be involved in your project, and who will be able to motivate you.

By following all of these tips, keeping your new resolution may seem less difficult.
