good news for households, the benchmark price is finally falling

The benchmark price of gas, which allows consumers to compare suppliers’ offers, is down for the month of January 2024. This is good news after several months of increases.

For 5 years at the Elysee Palace, Franois Hollande desperately waited for the unemployment curve to reverse. For the benchmark price of gas, which has as an indication replaced the regulated tariff (TRV) since last July, the trend changes in January. For the first time in many months, the price of the kilowatt hour (kWh) is down over one month after several successive increases.

According to the recommendations published this Monday by the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE), the rate considered reasonable for kWh increases from 0.104 euros per kWh to 0.099 euros for household heating and from 0.127 euros per kWh to 0.123 euros for a hot water household and cooking.

Between December 2023 and January 2024, the variable portion excluding taxes (HT) of a typical cooking/hot water and heating consumer decreases by 3.46/MWh. On the basis of data provided by GRDF, the CRE calculates an annual average price per MWh consumed, including the fixed and variable portions applied to consumers of the cooking/hot water and heating type. The average benchmark price thus amounts to 92.76/MWhcomments the CRE.

This step backward puts an end to the increase observed between July and December 2023 (+ 21.1% for small consumers and + 27% for households heating with gas). But, it must also be emphasized that the benchmark price for next January remains higher than that of November.

The transport rate could increase by 30% in July

Another reason for satisfaction for launching 2024, the CRE still recommends an annual price of between 102.94 euros and 257.18 euros per year for the subscription. Since the end of the TRV, the price of the subscription has increased by a little more than 2 euros including tax for the cooking/hot water consumer and almost 8 euros including tax for the heating consumer.
