Almost nothing more was needed to satisfy a community prioritizing the security of personal data and anonymity online. Just days after Skiff’s abdication, Proton AG took the opportunity to significantly improve its free offer. Without fanfare, the company announced on Reddit that the capacities of Proton Mail and Proton Drive would increase for all existing and future accounts, bringing the storage spaces to 1 GB and 5 GB respectively, compared to 500 MB and 2 GB up to now. A significant increase which should allow everyone to access a desired ecosystem that is confidential by default, whatever their budget and without feeling too restricted.
For the moment, Proton has not yet communicated on the effect of the change, nor on its terms. At the time of writing, our storage capacities have still not increased, but the description of the free offer has indeed been modified on the Swiss company’s website. Note that the conditions of use indicate that Internet users will still start with 500 MB for Proton Mail and 2 GB for Proton Drive, with the possibility of unlocking more space over time.
