This procedure could save lives in the future

The earlier cancer is discovered, the higher the probability that the disease can be defeated. An international research team now gives cause for hope. You report in the journal “Proceedings” of the US National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on a method for the early detection of 14 different types of cancer, according to the “Spiegel”. The method cannot currently be used on a regular basis.

As part of a study, the research team examined blood and urine samples from around 1,260 healthy people and people with cancer. The focus is on so-called glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). These are sugar compounds whose structure is different in cancer cells than in healthy ones. These GAGs have been able to detect 14 specific types of cancer at an early stage – including bladder cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer.

In the future, this method could help to offer a simple and cheaper test that is also suitable for mass screening. Currently, around 50 US dollars per test can be assumed.
