When it was launched in 1998, Google was a simple search engine with basic links to web pages. 25 years later, the service has evolved so much that web search becomes a simple filter.

From now on, if you want to search for information on the web and nothing else, you will have to do one more thing on Google. In parallel with its major annual conference for developers, the company announced the arrival of a new option in its search engine: the web filter.

10 blue links and that’s it

With the arrival of Gemini in Google searches, the place taken by Shopping or Images searches for different queries as well as YouTube video carousels on all results pages, Google wanted to offer an option for those who wish to simply go back to the search results of yesteryear, with the 10 stupid blue links per page.

The “web” filter, which will now live alongside the traditional “Images”, “Videos”, and “News” will therefore offer an experience devoid of all the features deployed by Google over the years. Point of summary by AI, information extracted from web pages or Wikipedia box, the tool will allow you “to simply see links in your search results» indicates the company’s X account.

For the firm, such a filter can be practical if you have “from a device with limited Internet access“, if you search for “more complex sources» than those having been digested by the AI or quite simply if “you would like to have access to textual search results» without the hassle of all the additional features now offered by the company’s search engine.

A symbolic change for Google

Basically, we can therefore guess that Google will integrate Gemini results into its classic search page by default and that they cannot therefore be deactivated. For those looking for a less augmented (and less cluttered?) experience, the “web” filter will serve as a refuge. The availability of this option should not take long according to the announcements made by the company, but undoubtedly it will take a little time to arrive on the old continent and on the computers of all users.

Symbolically, the provision of this filter which brings back the stupid blue links in their simplest form shows to what extent Google search has become more complex (or has gotten worse for some) in recent years. Over time, more and more additional elements have been added to the results page, sometimes offering an experience that is not easy to understand. This also shows that pure search is no longer the priority for Google, which has transformed the historic heart of its search engine into a simple option for finicky Internet users.
