Good Omens on Prime Video: but who is Beelzebub?

It’s time to brush up on our knowledge of the Prince of Hell in “Good Omens.”

Finally ! After four years of waiting, the fantasy series Good Omens has returned to Prime Video with a new adventure for the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and the demon Rampa (David Tennant). They were found trying to enjoy their life on Earth after stopping the Apocalypse.

Of course, things don’t go as planned. Since a naked archangel – Gabriel (Jon Hamm) – shows up at the door of Aziraphale’s bookshop, with no memory of who he is or how he got there. From there, life for Aziraphale and the retired demon Rampa becomes extremely complicated.

Heaven and Hell are desperate to find the runaway. As Rampa and Aziraphale attempt to arrange a romance between two humans, things become increasingly dangerous for them. The arrival of Heaven and Hell meant we got to see a whole host of new and old characters doing their best to make life for our favorite duo as chaotic as possible. And among these characters is Beelzebub.

Who is Beelzebub in Good Omens?

Beelzebub — who, according to series co-creator Neil Gaiman, uses the pronoun iel — appears in the first season of Good Omens as Rampa’s boss, high-ranking demon, and prince of Hell. To draw a clear comparison, it is the counterpart in the infernal version of the Archangel Gabriel, who in turn is Aziraphale’s patron for the duration of Armageddon.

In season 1, Beelzebub tries to convince the Antichrist, Adam Young, to start war between Heaven and Hell, promising him that he can rule the whole world once the fighting is over… is also the only time we see Beelzebub smile in the whole season… We see the demon again next in the role of the judge presiding over Rampa’s trial (but it is actually Aziraphale).

The term “Beelzebub” appears in the Bible as one of many names for Satan, while demonology identifies this character as one of the seven princes of hell, also known as the “Lord of the Flies” in due to his ability to fly, which is clearly the path taken by Good Omens, since his version of Beelzebub constantly appears surrounded by flies and with a fly-like appearance, starting with his headgear.

Beelzebub is an incredibly powerful demon, blessed with abilities such as shapeshifting, dimensional travel, flight, immunity to fire and poison, immortality, and the ability to generate swarms of flies powerful enough to devour anything and everything. anything. Iel also has access to magical powers and can time travel.

But there’s one thing Beelzebub couldn’t control in Season 2 of Good Omens… It’s falling in love with Gabriel!

Good Omens is currently available on Prime Video.
