Mentioned by numerous rumors in recent months, the 12.9-inch iPad Air could finally be nipped in the bud by Apple… at least for this year. Instead, the firm would indeed be content with an update of the current model, with some new features on the menu.

Apple may have finally abandoned its plans to launch an all-new 12.9-inch “XXL” iPad Air this year. At least that’s what the leaker ShrimpApplePro suggests, sometimes well-informed, who indicates that the firm would ultimately have only one iPad Air model under its belt, in 10.9 inches… that is to say -say the diagonal that we already know.

12.9-inch iPad Air canceled?

As a reminder, many rumors in recent months have mentioned the upcoming appearance of a 12.9-inch iPad Air in Apple’s catalog. The idea was to expand the Air range with an XXL tablet offered in addition to the “traditional” 10.9-inch version, a bit like what we now find on the MacBook Air, available as well in 13 inches than in 15 inches.

This concept would have allowed Apple to partly model its iPad Air range on its iPad Pros, available in two diagonals for years, but also to diversify its mid-range offering and potentially revive tablet sales, currently at half mast. . Obviously this project has either been canceled or postponed until later, but for our part we still recommend that you take this information (for the moment rather poorly substantiated) with a grain of salt.

New things anyway

As reported Wccftech, Apple would nevertheless still have the idea of announcing new iPads soon. On March 26, according to certain sources, the firm will unveil two new iPad Pros (11 and 13 inches) equipped with OLED screens and embedding a front sensor now positioned in landscape format (horizontal mode).

This new location for the front camera would also be relevant on the iPad Air, which would also benefit from another, even more important, new feature: the inclusion of sensors necessary for facial identification. Face ID would thus make its entry into the Air range, currently limited to a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. On the other hand, no change in design or chassis would be relevant for the iPad Air.
