Google’s Family Link parental control service was established 5 years ago. Today, the firm unveils a new look and new features for this application.

According to a statement released by Google, the search engine has redesigned Family Link to further highlight its most-used features: screen time limits, app blocking and approval, and more. These options are now more easily accessible, and new features requested by parents have also been made.

More accessible functions and notifications

Among the new features announced by Google, we learn that all the favorite features of parents will now be easier to use. In the Controls tab, parents can set screen time limits for each device or for a specific app.

It is even possible to temporarily change screen time settings, for example during holidays. All you have to do is tick the “Today only” box, which will replace the settings for the day, without modifying the general settings.

A central location has also been set up for parents to receive app download requests from their children and view notifications about updates, purchases and access to blocked websites. All of this information can be accessed by clicking on the notification bell at the top of the app.

A “Location” tab to see the location of your children

Family Link incorporates the Location tab, where parents can locate all their children on the same map. This tab also provides various useful information about each child’s device, such as battery life. The parent can also activate notifications to be alerted as soon as their child arrives at a destination or leaves a place.

Obviously, since parents won’t always have the time to monitor children’s activity on their devices in real time, Google is introducing the Highlights tab. The latter displays a history of the child’s app usage, screen time and installed apps. This is a new section that Google will update over time.

Latest news: Family Link is now available on the web, not just on the phone. All of these updates have been rolling out since October 18 and will be complete over the next few weeks.
