Google is celebrating the success of passkeys on its services. They have been used more than a billion times since their introduction for Google accounts.

If there’s one tech giant that has pushed hard recently for the widespread use of passkeys, it’s Google. The Mountain View firm considers that these access keys, generated locally by a device, can greatly increase the security of an account compared to a traditional password. It therefore sought to ensure that its users made more and more use of this system. Which seems to be the case.

The billion reached very quickly

Google has been offering the passkeys option for authentication since 2022 on Android and Chrome. But the real leap forward came when this option became available for Google accounts. And since then, Internet users have clearly seized this opportunity.

This is what the American giant reveals, which communicated impressive figures on the occasion of World Password Day. Thus, less than a year after the introduction of passkeys on Google accounts, they have been used more than 1 billion times, by some 400 million accounts around the world.

Passkeys are becoming more and more trendy

It must be said, as the American company notes, that the passkeys are both very simple to use and much more secure. “ Passkeys are easy to use and phishing resistant because they rely solely on fingerprint, face scan or a PIN, making them 50% faster than passwords » was thus explained.

Google is so sure of their effectiveness that it will soon add the option to its Advanced Protection Program, which aims to digitally protect at-risk people such as journalists or human rights activists.

And the Californian company is far from being the only one to fully embrace this authentication system. Only recently, we learned that passkeys were also arriving on X, as well as on WhatsApp. Is this system destined to become the primary means of authentication in the years to come?
