You will no longer need to connect to a VPN to hide your real IP address, Google Chrome will take care of it natively for you.
Google is about to test a new feature for its Chrome browser. This is a tool that allows you to hide your IP address from certain websites. Thanks to it, you can in particular protect yourself against data cross-referencing and the establishment of your complete user profile.
Not the equivalent of Apple’s private relay
“ Chrome reintroduces proposal to protect users from cross-site tracking by IP addresses », indicates a description of the function, revealed by Bleeping Computer. But unlike iCloud’s Private Relay, which prevents Apple from accessing browsing data, Google should be able to continue tracking your activity.
One of the challenges for Google is to find a balance between protection of user information and quality of experience. The IP address is data useful for certain functionalities, relating, among other things, to traffic routing and fraud prevention.
This is why only a selection of websites, which abuse tracking according to Google, will be affected by this protection. It is therefore not a question, for the moment in any case, of hiding your IP address from everyone on the Web.
Getting started with Chrome 119
Google plans to test this feature between Chrome versions 119 and 225. As a reminder, we are currently at Chrome 118, and the next update is expected in a few days.
For the first phase of the test, only users connected to their Google account and with an IP address located in the United States will be able to benefit from it. This will also be an optional option. International deployment will take place little by little depending on the results obtained.
To start, Google plans to proxy queries only to its own domains using a proprietary proxy. In future versions, a dual proxy system (one managed by Google and the other by an external service) is expected to be implemented to further enhance privacy. This method should ensure that neither proxies can access both the user’s IP address and the websites visited.
