Google Chrome: the new version is here, discover what’s new!

A little over a month after launching the beta, Google releases version 108 of its browser, Google Chromewith several interesting innovations to the key.

There is in particular the possibility of limiting the appetite of Chrome to save more battery.

A new version that consumes less energy?

Chrome, version 108, it’s in the stores! Once the new version of Google’s flagship browser is installed, you’ll be able to quickly experiment with several features and upgrades, one of which should particularly delight those who love Chrome but find how power-hungry this browser is. To better help you adapt your use of Google Chrome to the autonomy of your device, you can now test a new tab soberly called “Performance” in the browser settings.

Then you have the choice. You can choose to turn on a battery saver for Chrome when your device’s battery reaches the 20% battery life threshold. Otherwise, it is also possible that it is automatically set up when your device is not charging. This is therefore good news to allow Chrome not to consume starters, main courses and desserts in all circumstances, knowing that the test of this feature is valid for both devices under ChromeOS and for the desktop version of the browser. The path to follow is “chrome://flags/#battery-saver-mode-available”.

Google has also redesigned its omnibox for the Android version of its browser, following on from Material Design 3. For fans, the changes can be viewed by following the path “chrome://flags/#omnibox-modernize-visual-update “.

Web developers have their hands on keyboards on Android and iOS

Google Chrome is also moving favorably in the direction of developers. The goal is, on both Android and iOS versions of the browser, to let the developers of the websites consulted choose how the virtual keyboard is displayed there before performing a search. As it stands, a search on Android temporarily resizes the web page being viewed, while on iOS the keyboard appears above the page content. This will therefore no longer necessarily be the case from now on, even if it is a little confusing for users of the service.

Finally, note also that Google Chrome allows COLRV1 icon fonts to use ever brighter colors for emojis without consuming more storage space. Websites can prompt Chrome to display certain fonts, while providing fallback fonts if the former doesn’t display correctly. This is what improves visual comfort when browsing with Chrome.
