To better secure online payments, Google is integrating a virtual card tool into Google Pay on Android and Chromium.

The Google I/O 2022 conference was full of announcements, whether it was new hardware or software. The annual high mass of the American group had not spoiled us so much for years. One of the important aspects of the event was security, more than ever at the center of Google’s concerns.

Generate a virtual card with each payment

The Mountain View firm is particularly interested in online payment. This is how on the Chrome browser and on the Android mobile operating system, Google has revealed that it plans to launch a virtual card feature.

When you use autofill to enter your payment information when making an online purchase, Google will replace your actual card number with a separate number generated by its system to add an extra layer of security during payments.

This method also eliminates the need to manually type the CVV code of the card, which is always good to take to fight against, among other things, keyloggers.

Many compatible bank cards

To activate this virtual card option, simply go to your Google Pay settings. Not all credit card types are supported, but the majority of users will find their way around with support from Visa, American Express, Mastercard, and Capital One.

The deployment of the function is planned for the course of the summer of 2022… in the United States to start. We will have to wait for it to make its way to France.

In the meantime, other solutions allow you to create virtual cards so you don’t have to enter the coordinates of your physical card. Some online banks like Revolut offer this option free of charge, for example. Be careful though, more and more platforms detect the use of virtual cards and do not authorize their use. This is especially the case for services that offer a free trial period.
