You use the Web browser Do you and Chrome tend to open dozens of tabs? Google knows this, and should soon offer a tool to archive or delete tabs that have not been used for a while.

Competed by many other browsers, Google Chrome remains the most used in the world, even if significant flaws are regularly discovered. Associated with the search engine, it offers a whole range of tools provided by the firm and has been adopted by a large number of Internet users. However, many improvements are expected and one of the most requested should not be long.

Inactive tabs in the viewfinder

Making improvements and new features takes time, and it is not uncommon to discover them in certain files before seeing them arrive in beta and then be deployed… Or abandoned. It is within the Chromium code that dataminers noticed that Google is currently working on a feature called Tab Declutter for Android terminals. The idea? Automatically archive or delete tabs that haven’t been viewed for a long time.

Enough to give some fresh air to the browser of your smartphone or tablet. Concretely, the tabs would be archived first, giving you the opportunity to restore them later if necessary. However, it should be kept in mind that as it stands, this experimental functionality may well be abandoned and never be deployed to the general public if the test results are not satisfactory enough.

Tab management: a long-standing problem

While waiting to find out whether or not Tab Declutter becomes a feature accessible to all users, remember that Google has already dealt with the issue of tabs several times. Not long ago, the firm deployed on mobile a feature that had been present for a long time on the desktop version, namely the possibility of grouping tabs. Let’s also remember that Chrome 123, which leaves a lot of room for Gemini, has been available for a while.

In 2020, Google added a simple suggestion inviting Chrome users to close unused tabs, without providing any special tools. Obviously, the interest of Tab Declutter would be to automate sorting in tabs, without frustrating users.

However, it will be necessary to design it well, because we can already imagine user complaints indicating having lost a tab kept for a long time for a very specific purpose. For the moment, this experimental feature is reserved for Android devices, but it is not impossible that if successful, it will eventually integrate the desktop version of the browser.

  • Simple and pleasant to use
  • A well-secured browser

Complete and fluid, Google Chrome has established itself as a free reference for web browsers and is in an excellent position compared to other flagship applications such as Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Edge (formerly Internet Explorer).
