A discreet commercial success, the Chromecast has established itself as an effective solution for connecting your television without breaking the bank. According to persistent rumors, Google is preparing to present a new model to replace the 2019 one.
It may well be that Google has some surprises in store for us at its conference on October 6th. In addition to the Pixel 7 and a very likely Pixel Watch, the search giant seems to be preparing to release a new version of its Chromecast, according to information obtained by the WinFuture site.
Still limited to 1080p
This is not the first time that the new Chromecast has been talked about. Already last June, rumors evoked the launch of a product that would replace the “historic” Chromecast released more than three years ago. According to WinFuture, the new gadget has already arrived in the warehouses of resellers who are preparing to market it at the time of Google’s back-to-school conference. Or maybe even earlier, Google being used to releasing products without fanfare.
Especially since this new Chromecast does not seem to revolutionize the market for multimedia boxes. The device would certainly switch from Cast OS to Google TV to offer a more complete experience capable of competing with Amazon’s Fire Stick, but it would remain limited to streaming video at 1080p / 60 Hz. prerogative of Chromecast with Google TV sold between 60 and 70 €. This technical choice may seem strange, but with a floor price Google is most likely aimed at an audience that does not necessarily have a 4K television and who just wants to take advantage of the advantages of a connected television for cheap.
A price around 40 €
This new generation Chromecast would be sold for around 40 €, the same price as the Chromecast 3 when it was launched – the device is easily found at less than 30 € today. In short, the one and only difference of this new Chromecast would be the switch to Google TV which would allow the company to abandon Cast OS, an operating system that Google no longer uses anywhere except on its old Chromecast precisely . Even the Nest Hubs that once used a version of the OS have now switched to Fuchsia.
The abandonment of Cast OS also means that Google will stop using a system that made the success of its first multimedia boxes thanks to its inimitable simplicity. No interface, no remote control, just a small box capable of playing videos sent from your phone or tablet. If the new Chromecast works well under Google TV, this means that it will have storage memory to install applications, a probably more powerful processor and a remote control to navigate the interface. All for the same price as the Chromecast 3. We don’t stop innovation.
