The Google Cloud France region will be launched in early summer. Still far from the Microsoft and Amazon clouds in France, the American giant hopes to catch up there.

First announced for the end of last year and then for the beginning of 2022, the arrival of Google Cloud is now well and truly imminent. ” The countdown has begun “, writes this Thursday the French office of the company on Twitter, which invites its customers and users to meet on June 30 to celebrate the opening of the new Google Cloud region in France.

Three Google Cloud data centers installed in Île-de-France

So what do we know about the future of Google Cloud news in France? Three remote data centers (three availability zones) connected to the Alphabet subsidiary’s global private network are taking root in Île-de-France and are on the verge of being functional, where the company’s competitors , Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure (Microsoft) are already present, both having three zones as well.

Unlike the AWS French region, but like Azure, Google Cloud customers will not be able to choose their replication zone(s). In other words: it is the Mountain View firm that will choose directly for them.

This France region, which will be based on an infrastructure and security services identical to those used at Google’s headquarters, is in addition to the 30 existing regions (including around ten in Europe, in particular in Milan, Madrid, London, Belgium , in the Netherlands, in Frankfurt, and soon in Berlin and Turin).

With 8% market share in France, Google Cloud is still far from the mark

By opening a Google Cloud region in France, the American company guarantees its users more proximity to its teams, more availability and also less latency, advantages that could convince skeptics to lean towards its technological solutions.

For the moment, Google Cloud is lagging behind in France, even if its good growth in 2021 (+48%) is beginning to catch up. However, it is Microsoft that remains the leading cloud provider in France, with 46% market share. Microsoft (17%) follows further behind, while Google captured only 8% market share in 2021. The other 29% is monopolized by other players such as OVHcloud, Oracle, IBM, Scaleway or 3D Outscale.

What is certain is that Google Cloud is pulling out all the stops for the launch of its France region. The firm invites users and customers, by invitation, to the Maison de la Mutualité in Paris from 8 am on June 30, to attend the plenary launch meeting. In Lyon, Nantes and Lille on the same day, Google Cloud partners will also welcome a group of people, to view the plenary meeting but also to participate in workshops. Online, the launch will be accessible between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
