The fashion is for folding phones, and Google has understood this well. If Samsung dominates the market with its Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip, the Mountain View firm is determined to compete with the Korean manufacturer. After a Pixel Fold whose reception was… mixed, Google is reportedly working on a new folding mobile, according to information unearthed by the site 9to5Google.
A successor (or companion) to the Pixel Fold
By digging into the code of the Pixel Buds application (which accompanies Google’s wireless headphones), the site has indeed unearthed the mention of a product hitherto unknown to the battalion, nicknamed “Comet”. Tidyed up next to the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro (whose code names are “Shiba” and “Husky”), a piece of code actually mentions a third device called “Comet”.
With Google having a habit of using themed code names for its different generations of devices (the Pixel 8 are named after dog breeds, the Pixel 9 should inherit reptile names), this Pixel “Comet » therefore stands out. Its specific code name seems to indicate that it is part of a separate category, and that it is not a possible Pixel 8 or Pixel 9 whose existence has so far gone under the radar.
In addition, the identifier assigned to Comet in the code is later given the qualifier “fold”. Everything therefore suggests that this product would be a new folding Pixel phone.
The competitor of a Galaxy Z Flip?
It remains to be seen what type of phone Google has in mind. Indeed, the Pixel Fold was released just a few months ago, replacing it with a new model would seem a little premature at the moment. It is therefore possible that Google is preparing a Pixel smartphone that folds horizontally, and which would therefore compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 5. Or, the company is discreetly working on a new competitor for the Galaxy Fold, which will only be released in many months.
There is no doubt that we will know more in the coming months, if Google’s reputation for (very poorly) keeping its secrets is true.
Despite their young age, foldable smartphones already impress with their qualities. If Samsung has taken a little lead in this area, other big names like Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO are in ambush. These brands continue to innovate to offer foldable phones that have nothing to envy of the best “classic” smartphones on the market. Presentation.
