If you find that heat management is not the strong point of Google smartphones, the next generation of Pixel could be a game-changer. The successor to the Tensor G3 should indeed benefit from a new design method.

A few weeks ago, the design of the Pixel 9 Pro leaked for the very first time on the Web. At first glance, the biggest aesthetic change should concern the rear panel, visibly destined to disappear, in which the photo modules are usually housed.

Although the future Tensor G4 processor will not offer any major upgrades, a new report still suggests that the next-generation chip will offer much better thermal management than the Tensor G3.

Google still trusts Samsung for its new chip

For several months now, Google and Samsung have been working hand in hand on the chip that will power the Mountain View giant’s future smartphones: the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro. While previous rumors suggested that Google would no longer work with Samsung on the design of its new chip, and that it would therefore be transferred to TSMC, the company would have finally extended its collaboration with the South Korean manufacturer for another year .

From the start, Google’s Tensor chips have been designed with the participation of Samsung Electronics Foundry. However, from 2025, the American juggernaut should probably free itself from its Korean counterpart in favor of the Taiwanese company TSMC, precisely renowned for its ability to produce less energy-consuming chips.

In the meantime, according to a new report from Financial NewsSamsung and Google have managed to offer a considerable advance in energy efficiency for the Tensor G4, as reported to us by 9to5Google.

Tensor G4 will place greater emphasis on energy efficiency and heat management

According to information relayed by our colleagues at 9to5Google, the Tensor G4 chip, engraved in 4 nm, will benefit from a new packaging method called FOWLP (Fan-out Wafer Level Packaging). Concretely, this will give the new generation processor better thermal management while offering it improved energy efficiency and improved performance.

Last year, the Tensor G3 had actually already benefited from a more or less similar treatment. However, Samsung’s recent advances have visibly made it possible to achieve a much more convincing final result.

The Google Tensor G4 will be deployed this year and will be housed in the Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro, in addition to the Pixel Fold 2. However, beyond the expected improvements in thermal management and energy efficiency, everything points to believe that the Tensor G4 will not mark a divide in comparison with its predecessor.
