Google I/O 2022: the Pixel Watch is finally official, with Fitbit services

BRIEF // During a Google I/O conference rich in software announcements, but also hardware, Mountain View finally unveiled its connected watch running Android Wear. The Pixel Watch will however wait until the fall to be available.

Google’s fall will be decidedly full of announcements. The American giant, during a keynote that made it possible to discover the Pixel 6a in the smartphone market, unveiled the design of two future mobiles, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, whose marketing is planned for the fall. These two devices will not come out alone since they will be accompanied by a watch: the Pixel Watch.

The latter is not a surprise in itself, its design having already been glimpsed during an outing in the great outdoors. Google has therefore confirmed that it will have a round screen, like Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4, and a crown on the side like a watch, but also a silicone strap reminiscent of those of Fitbit. And for good reason, this watch will be the first to benefit from the expertise of the American firm in connected sport and health, since its costly acquisition by Google. This is not a watch suitable for extreme sports, but an onboard product “the best of Google” and what “keep fit with Fitbit”.

Google does not say more, contenting itself with distilling a few images of Fitbit services: sports monitoring with “minutes in active zones” using in particular a heart rate monitor, as well as that of sleep, for example. Obviously, the Pixel Watch is also an extension of the smartphone and this Android Wear 3 device will integrate Google services, starting with Google Wallet, Maps, and of course Google Assistant. For the other characteristics, but also its launch price, see you in the fall.
