Google is investigating adding profiles to its Messages app

Google takes special care of its messaging application. In the hope of convincing people to let go of Apple’s iMessages, the Mountain View company wants to make Messages a much more complete app, resembling WhatsApp or Messenger.

It was on Reddit that the information appeared. A user by the name of u/seeareeff spotted a previously unavailable setting. By clicking on the new Profile tab, four parameters are presented, allowing you to manage notifications or profile visibility. These settings seem impossible to activate for the moment, but are accessible on Android smartphones from across the Atlantic. We tried on a French Pixel 7 by searching for “profile” and the result was not conclusive.

At this time, we don’t know what Google Messages profiles look like, but it’s a safe bet they’ll look like other messaging apps. Adding profiles in Google Messages would make it easier to identify a person in groups or when receiving a missive from an unregistered number. As pointed out GSM Arenathe presence of profiles in applications such as WhatsApp and Messenger makes sense, but on a messaging service (SMS, RCS or even iMessages), the question of its relevance may arise.
