Google is preparing a revamped Play Store for Android tablets

Google had announced, at the Google I/O last May, its intention to update around twenty applications natively installed on Android touchscreen tablets. But the American giant will not stop there and is actually preparing a redesign of the application interface for these large screens.

To better accommodate tablets — but also foldable-screen smartphones and even Chromebooks — Google plans to roll out a new Play Store showing more content to the user by early 2023. shows in a first visual, it intends to highlight screenshots, videos and other descriptions in the home pages of its games and applications download sections, in order to facilitate the choice of titles to install for the user — and encourage their success. Developers are therefore encouraged to enforce the presentation rules laid down by Google so that their applications take full advantage of these new formats.

It must be said that the tablet market, if it is without comparison with that of smartphones, is of certain importance: the firm IDC mentions the figure of 40.5 million units sold in the second quarter of 2022 and notes that “new vendors like Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, and Realme also delivered results beyond expectations, which contributed to the growth of the Android tablet market” over this same period. The Google company, for its part, notes that the “users are increasingly investing in connected devices beyond their smartphone, such as tablets, connected watches and televisions”. It estimates the growth in the number of these Android devices that are not smartphones at 30% between 2021 and 2022.
