Google is working on an artificial intelligence capable of understanding 1000 languages

The success of ChatGPT has brought to light the amazing possibilities of artificial intelligence. To counter the OpenAI project, projects are multiplying and all the most important players in tech are mobilized. This is how Google recently unveiled the outline of Bard, its own conversational robot project. With it, Google aims to better organize information and, above all, to make it more accessible and useful to everyone. Bard will obviously rely on all the information made available on the web, in order to provide up-to-date and contextualized answers.

But the Mountain View company does not intend to stop there, and would have another project in its drawers: an artificial intelligence model compatible with no less than 1000 languages. Google has already announced that it has trained its language model on 12 million hours of speech and some 28 billion sentences covering more than 300 languages, the objective therefore being to reach 1000 soon. It is already capable of to automatically recognize, in audio, common languages such as English or Mandarin, but also rarer ones such as Azerbaijani. The learning process of the model developed by Google would adapt effectively to any new language.

In addition to its translation tool functionalities, this artificial intelligence would open up quite enormous prospects. It could even, in the long term, be integrated into connected objects, such as headsets or glasses. A first glimpse of its possibilities could be given at the next Google I/O conference, scheduled for May 2023. This should also focus on artificial intelligence.
