Google launches Bard to counter OpenAI-Microsoft’s ChatGPT: origin, usage and availability

Faced with ChatGPT, Google announced several actions to power Google Search and other products using AI systems, including Bard, a conversational system conceptually comparable to ChatGPT.

Google has been working on systems based on artificial intelligence for a long time. But faced with the popularization of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, and to show that the American giant is progressing in this environment, Google has just announced several intelligence-related projects in a blog post signed by Sundar Pichai, the CEO of the American company.

What is Google Bard?

The potential of AI really worries Google, so the answer will soon arrive. First announcement, the most important, is the launch the launch of bard, a competing chatbot to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Bard will be able to answer questions with text that mimics human syntax, but won’t be available to the public immediately. It will be tested by “trusted testers” in the coming weeks before its public availability. Bard is based on LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Application), comparable to Open AI’s GPT-3. LaMDA is different from other language models because it was trained on dialogue and not on text, which includes advanced concepts like multimodal user intent, reinforcement learning, and recommendations so that the conversation can move from one subject to another.

Moreover, LaMDA is based on the architecture Transform. This architecture produces a model that can be trained to read many words (a sentence or a paragraph, for example), pay attention to how those words relate to each other, and then predict which words will come next. .

Google also announces that these robots will be integrated into Googledirectly, with ” multiple AI-powered features will synthesize information for questions for which there is no single correct answer “.

Google pioneered natural language processing technologies

Google recalls that it is the owner of the start-up DeepMindthe latter is at the origin of the neural network Transform. This is the technology used by OpenAI’s GPT-3, and therefore by ChatGPT. Also remember that Microsoft has invested more than 10 billion dollars in OpenAI, the Redmond intends to install AI in its Office software suite (Word, Excel or Powerpoint), in its Bing search engine but also, and potentially, in the future version of Windows.

Google also announced that its language models will also be accessible for developers and companies to create new services, as OpenAI already does. Access to the API which will, of course, be paid. Thus, OpenAI-Microsoft finds itself facing a major competitor only a few weeks after having started to make a strong impression.

At the same time as its announcement, and according to information from Bloomberg, Google has reportedly invested nearly $400 million in an artificial intelligence startup called Anthropic, which is currently testing a ChatGPT-style automatic text generation model. What (again) to compete with OpenAI’s AI.
