Google is adding a new tool called “Multisearch” to its search engine. By combining words and images in the search engine, you can find precisely the subject that interests you, even if you have forgotten the name.
All you have to do is click on the “camera” icon in the search bar of the application, then select the image you want and the relevant keywords.
When words fail you
By coupling the image to the words, Google will be able to find precisely the objects and information you are looking for. This way, you can ask more specific questions. For example, if you want to know how to water a plant that was given to you, choose a photo of the plant and then ask for instructions. Multisearch will identify the plant and give you the necessary information. You can take photos directly from the search engine, or select them on your phone.
The feature isn’t perfect yet, but it could improve search results when looking for the name of something that’s particularly hard to describe. A painting whose painter you would like to find, for example, or a building whose history you would like to know. This function can therefore serve a multitude of purposes.
Perfect for shopping
According to Google, this tool is currently effective if you are looking for products for sale on the Internet, such as clothes or particular objects. The Mountain View firm posted a demo of the new feature: to find a dress seen in any photo, select the photo in the search engine with a keyword. To find a similar dress of another brand or another color, select the photo and the name of the brand, or the desired color.
So you can photograph the clothes directly in the window to find similar styles online. Google also wants to allow users to find decorative objects, furniture or tableware from a photo of a product of the same style. The feature is currently only available in beta in the United States, but it should soon arrive in France.
