Google’s navigation app never stops offering updates. The latest feature allows easier navigation from the lock screen on Android and iOS.

Google took its time, but kept its promises. In February 2023, the company promised the arrival of a feature called “itinerary at a glance» on Google Maps. The latter should make it possible to offer more precise information on its route without having to launch the dedicated navigation mode. A year later, the tool has finally arrived on iOS and Android mobiles.

Google Maps gets smarter

Nestled deep in a menu (accessible via a click on his profileThen Settings And Navigation settings), the option allows you to “cView the updated ETA and next directions directly on the route overview or lock screen“. Previously, to access this data you had to launch navigation or unlock your phone and display the application in full screen. Once this option is enabled, this information will update no matter how you use the app.

Concretely, this offers more precision to those who find their way on foot, by bike or by car without necessarily starting the navigation in due form. So, rather than seeing the traditional blue arrow in first person mode, you will be able to stay in “flyover” mode of the map while having access to more precise information on arrival time and route correction. This can be useful if you want to get an overview of how far you have come or upcoming junctions on your journey.

A function disabled by default

It should be noted, however, that this option is off by default, probably to comply with the GDPR since Google specifies that this mode requires the collection of browsing data.to improve Maps for all users“. However, you can activate it by going through the settings or by clicking on the blue dot and unfolding the map at the bottom of the screen when calculating a route.

The deployment of this feature follows numerous announcements from Google regarding its mapping service. In just a few months, the company has deployed artificial intelligence tools to better advise users in their daily lives, improved navigation in tunnels and even simplified privacy protection settings.
