Will you use a little artificial intelligence with your Google Maps? The famous navigation application has just been enriched with several features possible thanks to AI. “Helping you plan your trips with confidence, make sustainable choices and quickly find inspiration for activities”, such is the ambition of this new update according to Google’s press release.

Google Maps allows you to visualize your routes with an immersive 3D view

The new AI features of Google Maps

For starters, Google is improving Immersive View. Previously allowing the visualization of emblematic monuments of large cities in 3D, the functionality is extended to routes. Announced at Google I/O 2023, this feature offers “a whole new way to preview every step of your journey in a multi-dimensional way, whether you’re on foot, by bike or in a car”.

Please note, it is only available in a few cities at the moment: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Dublin, Florence, Las Vegas, London, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Paris, San Francisco, San Jose, Seattle, Tokyo and Venice .

Google then adds Lens in Maps, a function combining AI and augmented reality to display businesses around you. By pressing the new icon, between voice input and profile photo in the search bar, Google Maps displays a Street View referencing “information about nearby ATMs, public transport stops, restaurants, cafes and shops”.

Google Maps then gains more detail with more realistic buildings, more precise information for highway lanes, and expanding AI-powered speed limit collection to 20 additional European countries.

We also learn that search results are improving. For specific queries, Google Maps will now display images of matching locations. To do this, Google uses artificial intelligence to define the content of the published images.

For example, the American company shares the results of a query to find a place making artistic slats in the shape of an animal. The results thus highlight the corresponding images, and even display them on the map.

Finally, Google is refining the display of information on charging stations for electric vehicles. We thus find the availability and type of terminal offered.
