Google Maps has introduced a new function that is intended to significantly improve navigation. But you have to activate the feature first.

The mapping and navigation app Google Maps is continually being improved with new functions. Anyone who also uses the software in their car will appreciate a new hidden feature. This was recently quietly integrated into the software. The map service now offers the possibility of improving navigation within tunnels.
As Smartdroid reports, the new feature was not announced, but appeared unannounced in the settings. If you browse through the navigation settings, you will find the “Bluetooth beacons for tunnels” option there. By default, the feature is disabled, but can be turned on with a tap. We could only find the option on Android, but it could not be found on iOS.
Bluetooth instead of GPS
With the help of the Bluetooth function, navigation in longer tunnels is intended to be significantly optimized; after all, the GPS signal there is disturbed and the display on the map is sometimes not entirely accurate.
It works like this: There are small Bluetooth beacons in the tunnel walls (if there are any) that can communicate with your cell phone. They transmit the exact location so that the vehicle’s location can always be displayed correctly on the map.
If you want to try out the feature, tap your profile name on the Google Maps home page on your Android phone and select “Settings.” Then tap on “Navigation Settings”. Here you can find the new feature under “Bluetooth beacons for tunnels”.
It is not known how many tunnels are equipped with beacons today. But if you activate the option, you are at least prepared for the future. It’s quite possible that these small gadgets are now standard equipment for renovations.
