AI is currently at the heart of Google’s activities, and Maps is taking the opportunity to evolve on many levels.
Under construction for years behind the scenes of Mountain View, the Immersive View and Live View features are therefore officially beginning their deployment.
See your house in an immersive way (or almost)
The immersive view was first announced in 2021, but it took until the rise of artificial intelligence for it to really start to take shape. The idea is thus to offer a 3D representation of the real world in Google Maps, navigable thanks to Street View.
To achieve this result, Google compiled billions of images and applied three-dimensional processing to them using neural radiation fields. This also includes lighting, to display a view fully deserving of its immersive name.
The technology, already available on Android and iOS (we will have to wait a little longer for the desktop version), is still in its infancy, with London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo as test cities for now. . The immersive view will arrive over the months in other cities, led by Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice. You will therefore have to wait some time before you can go and observe your house.
Navigation becomes an augmented reality
Google is also applying and leveraging artificial intelligence on Maps to scale search in real time. With Live View, it is thus possible to use augmented reality to find points of interest around you.
To do this, simply hold your phone in front of you, and augmented reality will display the shops and buildings detected as well as information about them directly on the screen. To navigate to the desired destination, Live View will also display arrows so that you can orient yourself, both outdoors and indoors.
As for the immersive view, Live View is still in the test phase and for the moment deployed on the Android and iOS versions, only in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo. It will take patience before seeing augmented reality compatible with Google Maps in the rest of the world.
