With the arrival of spring, Google is cleaning up its mapping app a little. The interface of Maps will soon change and the software will gain even more functionality.
We are no longer stopping Google and its desire to transform the GPS experience on mobile. In recent weeks, the company has already added a good dose of AI to its mapping application, modified its interface and added information on the urban environment, but new features continue to abound. In a blog post published on March 27, Google now announces that it is tackling your vacation planning.
Maps turns into a tourist guide
Maps will be enriched, only in the United States for the moment, with a list of unmissable places during your visits abroad. By simply entering the name of the city concerned, the application will bring up popular lists indicating all the places not to be missed for a successful stay. In addition to seeking recommendations from its community, the app will also highlight content from specialized sites like Lonely Planet or other tourist guides. Unfortunately, the pilot program will only roll out to a few North American cities at this time.
To motivate list makers, Google has also put a twist on its management interface, allowing everyone to reorganize the elements of their list as they see fit to make it an ultimate curation platform. This new feature is part of Google’s recent effort to gradually transform Google Maps into a real social network for ultra-connected urban Internet users.
More information on a less busy interface
Obviously, 2024 being the year of AI, Google also announced that Maps will now be able to provide you with summaries of every bar, restaurant or museum around you. By analyzing the reviews, photos and ratings given to different places, the application will be able to tell you the specialties of the restaurant 100 meters from your place of residence, the name of the dishes or even the price of them. The search giant even claims to be able to determine whether a dish is vegetarian or vegan, helping those following a specific diet find their way around the city.
Finally, the Maps interface is expected to change in the coming weeks, with Google promising “a cleaner home screen with fewer tabs” as well as “new pin colors that make it easier to find places on the map“. One way to respond to recent criticism of the overloaded Maps interface.
