Google Messages lets you send voice messages from your smartwatch

Google’s popular messaging app, Messages, just got an exciting new feature on its Wear OS version that should make life easier for many users.

If you use a Wear OS compatible smartwatch, like Samsung’s latest Galaxy Watch 6, you probably know that it offers a few ways to quickly respond to messages received on your smartphone, such as text quick replies. However, Google now wanted to go further, adding voice messages.

In a support document on what’s new in Wear OS, Google explains that the Messages application now allows you torecord and send voice messages directly from your smartwatch, without ever touching your phone.

Voicemail is coming to Google Messages for Wear OS

According to information from Android Central, just tap the microphone icon in a message, where you’ll have the option to send a voice message or use text-to-speech. Sending a voice message brings up a basic recording screen that starts automatically, with a progress bar around the edges of the screen.

As on smartphone, you will then have the option to go back or send your message, but it seems to be for now impossible to listen to your recording before sending.

Indeed, it now remains to be seen whether you will eventually be able to listen to audio files on your watch. As a reminder, playback is currently not supported and users are prompted to “View File on Phone”. Given the new possibility of sending voice messages from a watch, this functionality would not be refused. We even hope that Google will eventually add the transcription of voice messageswhich is already available on smartphones.

In addition to voice messages, Google Assistant is also available in other languages, including Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish and Polish. However, Google Assistant is now only accessible on newer watches, as Google decided to remove the feature from those running Wear OS 2.

Finally, Google Wallet on Wear OS is also now supported in more countries and regions, including Albania, Argentina, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Isle of Man, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and San Marino.
