Google Nest Doorbell: the new generation of connected doorbell records scenes longer

Finally, there will be no need to wait for the conference on October 6, 2022 to discover the new Nest products planned for this end of the year. Google has made the choice to formalize them today in order to undoubtedly prevent them from stealing the show from the Pixel 7 expected during the event, with a first Pixel Watch as a bonus. They not only include a new Nest Wifi, but also a doorbell: the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd generation).

Back to wired for Nest’s third doorbell

Not to be confused with the Nest Doorbell (wired) from 2017, formerly Nest Hello, this new model is closer to the Nest Doorbell (battery) launched just a year ago.

It takes over not only the aesthetics, but also the equipment, except of course for its battery. It therefore requires an electrical connection, more precisely a 16-24 V AC system. The absence of a battery allows the Nest Doorbell (wired, 2nd generation) to be a little more compact (13.1 x 4.2 x 2.8 cm) and lighter (140 g) than the battery version (16 x 4.6 x 2.4 cm for 206 g), but also to offer some additional features.

More recording options

Recordings should include footage from the 2 s preceding the events. Google also mentions the possibility of continuously recording what is happening in front of the house with its Nest Aware Plus subscription.

The other features are however identical, and we find in particular intelligent detection with recognition of people, animals, vehicles, but also packages, two-way audio or compatibility with Google Assistant and Alexa for voice commands. . The new Nest Doorbell also inherits the 1.3 Mpx sensor with a 3: 4 ratio from the 2021 model, and allows you to enjoy 3 hours of history in the cloud at no additional cost.

The Nest Aware subscription again allows you to extend this period to 30 or 60 days, but also to take advantage of face recognition, in addition to accessing continuous recording for the most complete formula. Allow 10 €/month, against 5 €/month for the other. As for the doorbell, Google has not mentioned the European launch time, but we note that it will be offered at the same price as the Nest Doorbell (battery) in the United States, or $180. We can therefore expect a price of 199 € if it were to be offered one day with us.

The redesigned Google Home app as a bonus

In the meantime, Google is announcing a major overhaul of its Google Home app, in particular to facilitate access to images from cameras and doorbells – a web version will even be offered for the latter. The home page will also be enriched with a new Favorites tab, while spaces by category will be available for the main household equipment (cameras, lights, thermostats, etc.). Customizable spaces will also be added later and Google promises to give more space to automations.

This new version of the application also aims to prepare for the arrival of Matter and the integration of compatible devices, but it will immediately be offered only in Public Preview. It is only at the end of 2022 that it should officially replace the current version.
