Google no longer wants spam or AI-generated content in search results


Google is hunting for poor quality content and spam in its search results. Often generated by AI, the firm will have to succeed in distinguishing them from others.

Artificial intelligence may tackle the generation of ultra-realistic films or the creation of video games from simple images, but it remains particularly gifted inwriting texts. It is not for nothing that in extreme cases entire newsrooms are replaced by AI. The Mountain View firm announces changes to its search engine, particularly in the display of certain content. Even if the term is not used directly, we understand by reading between the lines that AI abuse is in Google’s crosshairs. But not only. First important modification: the results of “bad quality” And “not very original” will be demoted. For example a site created solely to respond to as many search terms as possible. The company believes that “the combination of this update and [ses] previous efforts will reduce […] by 40%” this type of content in the results.

Concerning spam, we think of a recent phenomenon whose rapid increase is alarming: fake obituaries. Artificial intelligence is responsible for writing these texts in record time, including at least the biography of a person who recently died. They then flood the search results, ahead of those carried out by journalists for example. The major difficulty will be distinguishing humans from machines, especially since Google is currently testing its own article-writing AI with publishers.
