Google phones: These cell phones no longer receive updates

The hardware isn’t even old yet, so the software causes problems – it’s not uncommon for the end of support for a cell phone to be to blame in the fast-moving world of smartphones. Without updates, owners of older models are at risk of security gaps. Vulnerabilities remain permanent and, in the worst case, the outdated operating system becomes interesting for hackers and cybercriminals. Although many devices are still in use years after purchase, Google is also gradually discontinuing support for its Android devices.

Pixel 3a and 3a XL: Final Countdown

The end of support is currently affecting Google’s Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. The Pixel 3a stood out as an exceptional smartphone, mainly because of the good camera and the night vision mode in low light. The price was cheap and Google gave a three-year guarantee for security patches and Android system updates. The technology of the bigger brother 3a XL is identical, and there was also a three-year update guarantee for the system. That time has now come. Despite the end of support, users can still look forward to a final update two months later. That should get rid of bugs. When asked, a Google spokesman told the technology website Android Police: “The final update for Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL will be rolled out to users by July 2022.”

Without updates, there is no security

After the end of the update, it is basically possible to continue using a mobile phone. However, newly discovered security gaps are then no longer closed and the smartphone – as mentioned at the beginning – is more vulnerable. So if you want to protect the data on your cell phone, you will unfortunately have to resort to a newer model sooner or later.
