Google Pixel 6a: the new fingerprint sensor shows its speed in this video

An unboxing video of the Pixel 6a was posted on the “Google Retail Training France” YouTube channel before it was taken down. We learn some additional information on Google’s future smartphone, with the added bonus of a demonstration of its brand new fingerprint sensor.

Expected for release on July 28, Google’s Pixel 6a is already showing itself on video even before its official release. It is via a video posted on the YouTube channel “Google Retail Training France” that the firm’s next mid-range smartphone has already been unpacked, which has since been removed.

The leak from an official source gives us more details about the upcoming smartphone (and in French please), especially regarding the performance of the new fingerprint sensor which seems to have been corrected.

A more efficient fingerprint sensor

This video, which can still be found online here, allows us to see the Pixel 6a’s fingerprint sensor in action. Google had indeed announced that it would use a sensor this time different from that used on the Pixel 6 to overcome the slowness problems that some users could experience when unlocking their smartphone.

Here the fingerprint sensor now seems to allow the Pixel 6a to unlock fairly quickly, which is good news, but it is difficult to really assess on video.

Exit the charger in the box for the Pixel 6a

The video also shows us the contents of the phone box. In addition to having a real preview of the Sage and Charcoal colors, we learn here that like the Pixel 6, Google will no longer include a charger in the Pixel 6a box. It will therefore also be necessary to buy it separately here. We will simply find a USB-C cable as well as a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Inside this box, we also find the mention of the Google Tensor SoC on which Google seems to want to focus.

The video evokes an autonomy of up to 72 hours for this Pixel 6a (probably with very moderate use). That seems quite ambitious considering that would be more than the Pixel 6 Pro can achieve with the same chip and therefore the same power output. We can assume that with its smaller 6.1-inch screen and lower refresh rate the Pixel 6a will draw less battery power than its colleagues, but we still doubt these claims while waiting to actually have the product in hand. Especially since the battery displayed by this smartphone seems to have been reduced to 4410 mAh against 4614 mAh for the Pixel 6.

Finally, we learn that the Pixel 6a should also be entitled to an IP67 certification which will protect it against water and dust. This certification had arrived on the Pixel 5a which was also waterproof, but had not been made available in France when it was launched. This is a good thing for the durability of this smartphone. This further justifies its price hike over the Pixel 4a.
