Google Pixel 7: the new Tensor G2 chip looks disappointing, according to a first benchmark


Just a few days before their official release, we already know a little more about Google’s next Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, and in particular about their new Tensor G2 processor.

As Google confirmed a few days ago on its official website, the upcoming Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro which will be launched on October 6th will be powered by a brand new chip made by Samsung, the Tensor G2. Before the release of smartphones, developer Kuba Wojciechowski was able to get his hands on a lot of information about the chip, named ” gs201 » internally.

From the data he was able to gather, the Tensor G2 processor is nothing revolutionary. The latter is almost identical to the previous generation found on the Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 6a. The chip would still bet on an 8-core configuration with 2 Cortex-A1 cores, 2 Cortex-A76 cores and four Cortex-A55 cores.

The Google Tensor G2 will be much less powerful than expected

While we thought that Google was going to base itself on the recent Exynos 2200 of the Galaxy S22 for its own personalized chip this year, it is not so. Processor inherits aging cores from previous generationbut this time will be engraved in 4 nm 4LPE by Samsung. According to a first benchmark on Geekbench, the cores have only received a small boost in their frequency, which should result in a very small performance gain of around 10%. Cortex-A76 cores increase by 100 MHz to 2.35 GHz, while Cortex-X1 cores are 50 MHz faster, at 2.85 GHz.

If the chip is disappointing at the CPU level, the GPU part benefits from a size improvement. The Tensor G2 is equipped this time with a Mali-G710 graphics part, which should be 20% more efficient and 20% more energy efficient than the old Mali-G78. The Machine Learning part is also 35% faster. We therefore expect better photo performance on the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, since Google Camera is largely based on the Tensor chip GPU. In terms of connectivity, we will be entitled to a Samsung’s new SR300 modem.

The new Tensor G2 chip therefore does not look particularly revolutionary, but this could change the next generation. The next Tensor G3, whose code name is “zuma”, would be made with the new Samsung 3nm GAAFET process. The latter promises quite significant performance increases.
