Google Pixel 9 and 9 Pro XL: the first benchmarks reveal what the smartphones have under the hood

The Google Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro XL, scheduled for fall, are gradually being revealed and their design has already been leaked. It is now through the first Geekbench data appearing on the Internet that we have an overview of the capabilities of these devices.

Smartphones powered by the Tensor G4 chip

These first benchmark results confirm the rumors concerning the existence of a third model. Thus, the Mountain View firm would present three variants: the Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL. Three high-end smartphones equipped with the new chipset home, Tensor G4.

This octa-core chip displays high operating frequencies, surpassing those of the Tensor G3, despite a reduction in the number of cores:

  • 1 Cortex-X4 core at 3.1 GHz
  • 3 Cortex-A720 cores at 2.6 GHz
  • 4 Cortex-A520 cores at 1.95 GHz

The major difference between the Pixel 9 and the Pixel 9 Pro XL would lie in the amount of RAM. The Pixel 9 would therefore, like its predecessor, be equipped with 8 GB of RAM, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL would have 16 GB, compared to 12 GB for the Pixel 8 Pro released in 2023. This increase in RAM should improve management intensive tasks and especially the performance of artificial intelligence functions.

Correct results, but not spectacular

The Geekbench scores posted on social networks show notable differences between the two models:

  • Pixel 9: 1590 points in single core and 3821 points in multi-core.
  • Pixel 9 Pro XL: 1950 points in single core and 4655 points in multi-core.

While these results are encouraging, they place the Tensor G4 behind current leaders Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Apple’s A17 Pro. However, these preliminary benchmarks may still evolve before the official release, and are therefore not representative of the final performance of the two smartphones.

You will have to wait until the start of the school year to discover the full potential of this Google Pixel 9 series. For its part, the Pixel 8a has been available for a few weeks and is very convincing.
