Google Pixel Tablet vs Apple iPad: a multipoint comparison

Oliver Adey 26 May 2023 4 min read

The tablet industry has just gained a major new player, with the official launch by Google of its Pixel tablet. What to change the situation? Because for years, the tablet market has been dominated by Samsung and Apple.

On the other hand, Google’s attempts to create a tablet are like a roller coaster, from the successful birth of the Nexus to the death of the Google Pixel Slate in 2018. So the revival of the Google tablet marks the beginning of ‘a new era, which may well be worth your attention and a hole in your budget.

In terms of specs, Google’s Pixel tablet is comparable to Apple’s launched at the end of 2022. But if you’re looking for a new tablet, how do you choose between the two? Let’s explore the features of both offers below to help you make the right purchase decision.

You should buy the Google Pixel Tablet if…

Google

1. You want a tablet that acts as a smart home hub

In most of the images of the new Google Pixel Tablet, you will notice that it is presented with a docking station, i.e. a charging station and a speaker which are included during the purchase. That puts the entire 128GB offering at a price of €680.

The docking station allows the Pixel tablet to act as a home hub, similar to how one can use an Amazon Fire tablet like the Echo Show. The regular iPad, meanwhile, starts at $590 for the 64GB model and doesn’t come with any additional accessories.

When you drop and lock your Pixel tablet into its cradle, you can turn it into a digital photo frame, use the built-in Google voice assistant to ask questions or listen to music, and even control compatible smart devices in your home. So when you’re not using the tablet by hand, it can act as a remote control to adjust things like the temperature of your Nest thermostat.

2. You need more battery life

The Google Pixel tablet boasts 12 hours of video streaming battery life, compared to 10 hours for the 2022 iPad. This ensures that your tablet won’t let you down when you need it most, especially if you forget to connect it to the docking station or if you’ve been on the go all day.

If two hours of additional autonomy does not seem significant to you, consider yourself lucky not to have been left hanging before the outcome of an episode of Succession due to a discharged battery!

3. You appreciate the benefits of an Android device

The iPad is known for its iconic, simplistic design inside and out. But simplicity isn’t for everyone; it may seem impersonal and boring to many. The Android operating system offers more customization options than the iPad, including the ability to side load apps, alternate apps, and creatively change the look of the user interface.

1. You prefer something proven and reliable

Now that Google has perfected its smartphone manufacturing with its Pixel phones, it’s putting all that experience to work in an Android tablet that’s (hopefully) better survivable. The iPad, on the other hand, has been a hit in the tablet world for years – and the 10th generation iPad is its finest model yet.

iPad is to tablets what iPhone is to smartphones, thanks to Apple’s consistent and reliable execution. You know what you’re getting with an iPad, and you also know the risks of buying one. If you’re looking for a tried-and-true tablet and put “home automation features” low on your priority list, the iPad is the better of the two.

2. Using the keyboard is important to you

Although the Google Pixel Tablet comes with a docking station, one thing is missing that could make or break the tablet experience for many users: a keyboard! Google didn’t announce a keyboard for its Pixel Tablet at Google I/O, which doesn’t mean it won’t release one later.

The 2022 iPad, meanwhile, is compatible with the Magic Keyboard Folio, which is available for purchase separately. Disadvantage ? The Magic Keyboard Folio will set you back an extra $300, which isn’t to say there aren’t cheaper alternatives. For anyone who likes to use their tablet as a streamlined laptop or just likes having a keyboard, the iPad is the perfect fit.

3. You like the Apple ecosystem

The Apple ecosystem is closed, simple and coherent, in which Apple devices work perfectly together, sometimes avoiding all the others. If you’ve already surrounded yourself with Apple products, like an iPhone, AirPods, AirTags, or a Mac, and you’re on the hunt for a new tablet, it may be in your best interest to invest in an iPad rather than in an Android tablet, period.
