Google is currently preparing a new feature dedicated to Chrome.

A new “Search Companion”, based on Google Lens, to give additional context to the page in use.

Towards a “Companion” for Google Chrome

Google Chrome, which is responsible for around two-thirds (66%) of all desktop browsing sessions according to Statcounter, should soon welcome a new functionality. The latter, called “Search Companion”, will be housed directly in the sidebar of the browser.

Concretely, it will be for the American giant to always integrate a little more (and a little better) the capacities of a certain Google Lens. By launching Search Companion, the browser will take care of sending various additional information, on the current page, to the user.

Towards a more contextualized navigation

According to the first information gleaned by 9to5Googleit would seem that this future Search Companion will be able to identify certain types of data relating to a web page being consulted, such as its title and other types of metadata, in order to display various information about the content. ‘screen.

For a few weeks now, the web giants have been integrating more AI into their browsers/search engines, like at Microsoft for example, whose Bing engine has experienced a real renaissance since the integration of ChatGPT.

Of course, the whole will take advantage of the functionalities offered by Lens, to search for images on the page in order to add more context to the information collected. For example, if the user consults a product (smartphone, game console, household appliance, etc.) Chrome can then suggest very specific offers or even pages of technical specifications, in order to facilitate research.

always according to 9to5Google, the feature would be in development since November 2022, and could be deployed in a future version of Google Chrome. This could be officially presented at the next Google I / O, next May.
