The Google Cloud division took advantage of its annual high mass to unveil its first Axion processors, based on ARM, which will offer performance and energy gains to the American giant’s data centers.
During Google Cloud Next ’24, which is currently taking place in Las Vegas, the Mountain View firm has made numerous announcements, including that of its first ARM processor designed for data centers. Called Google Axion, it demonstrates the interest that Tech giants have in designing their own components in-house. This one is more promising.
Google Axion, significantly better performance than x86 processors
On paper, Google Axion promises to deliver up to 50% higher performance compared to x86 processors, and up to 30% higher performance compared to the fastest general-purpose ARM instances available in the cloud market today. today.
Google Cloud also touts the energy efficiency of the Axion processor, which can be up to 60% higher than current generation x86 instances. The company has also indicated that it wants to make it easier for its customers to transfer their existing workloads to ARM.
Google delegates certain processor tasks to make it more efficient
Axion CPUs are based on ARM Neoverse V2 technology, which offers considerable performance for workloads, such as in-memory caches, open source databases, multimedia processing (photo, video), or even services. web and applications.
To stand out, Google Axion is banking on Titanium, a microcontroller system that supports security and network operations. The Hyperdisk solution, designed for even more demanding mission-critical applications, offers a comprehensive suite of data persistence and management capabilities.
By relying on these different systems, the Axion processor delegates tasks and is thus more efficient. After having been tested at Google, the processor will very soon be made available to tens of thousands of customers of the Google Cloud division, who can also benefit from ARM-compatible software and solutions in the Google Cloud Marketplace. It is said that many Google Cloud customers (Snap, Datadog, CrowdStrike, Cybereason, Broadcom) are eager to see the benefits of Axion-based virtual machines.
